ChatGPT: A Home Tool That People Bring to Work?
30 October 2026
OpenAI has started publishing data on how people actually use ChatGPT. It is called Signals, and it is built from a sample of 1 million messages a month from everyday users, not companies, from July 2024 to September 2026. As OpenAI says, no one at their end reads the messages. An AI model sorts each one into a category, such as work or personal, and only the totals are shared, with privacy protections added. These reports are interesting as they give a glimpse into where AI adoption is headed.
Here is what stood out to me (analysis with the help of AI).
1. ChatGPT is mostly used for life, not work
Only about a third of messages are work-related, down from half two years ago. Most people are using it to understand things, plan things and talk things through. If you think of it only as a work tool, you are missing most of how people use it.
2. At home people ask, at work people hand over tasks
Outside work, questions are the largest category of messages. At work, nearly half are “do this for me” requests, like drafting an email or a report. It is one tool used in two different ways, and if you only use one of them, you are probably getting half of what it can do.
3. It is not just a replacement for Google
Looking things up grew a little, from 17% to 20% of messages. The faster growth was in making images and talking through ideas or feelings, which went from 6% to 18%. Those are things a search engine never did, and they are where the new use is coming from.
4. The newer users are older
People over 45 went from 10% to 16% of messages, and the 65+ group tripled. They lean towards looking things up more than writing. ChatGPT is moving from early adopters to everyone else, and everyone else uses it more like a helpful answer machine.
5. A lot of work use happens on people’s own accounts
On the top paid personal plan, 68% of messages are about work. The data leaves out company accounts, so real workplace use is higher than shown. Many employees are already using it for their jobs, on their own, before their company has a plan.
ChatGPT is not a work tool that people also use at home. It is a home tool that people bring to work, and the habits that decide how well AI works inside a company are being formed outside it.
